The fastest way to tell overwatering from underwatering is to stop looking at the leaves and start with the soil and the weight of the pot. Wet compost plus soft, limp, yellowing leaves is overwatering. Dry compost, a pot that feels light, and crisp brown edges is underwatering. The confusing case — a plant that is wilting hard in soil that is clearly damp — is almost always overwatering, because roots damaged by waterlogging cannot absorb water even when it is right there.
That last sentence is the whole reason this question is hard. An overwatered plant is genuinely going thirsty. It just is not thirsty for the reason you think, and giving it more water makes it worse. Below is a one-minute test that separates them properly, a comparison table, and what to actually do in each case.
Why they look so similar
Roots need oxygen. They respire like the rest of the plant, and they take that oxygen from the air pockets between particles of compost. When compost stays saturated those pockets fill with water, the roots suffocate, and root cells begin to die. Opportunistic fungi such as Pythium and Phytophthora thrive in exactly those conditions, which is why waterlogging and root rot are usually the same story at different stages.
Dead roots cannot move water. So the plant above the compost starts showing every classic symptom of drought — drooping, wilting, dry-looking edges — while sitting in a pot full of water. Underwatering, by contrast, is a shortage of water with the oxygen supply intact, which is why the roots stay alive and why it is so much more forgiving. Caught early, a properly thirsty plant often looks normal again within a day of a good soak. An overwatered one does not, because there is structural damage to repair.
Two problems, opposite treatments, near-identical symptoms from across the room. Hence the test.
The one-minute test, in order
Do these in sequence and stop as soon as you get a clear answer. No equipment needed.
- Put a finger into the compost, a few centimetres down. Not the surface — the surface dries first and lies. The RHS advice for a struggling houseplant is exactly this: feel how moist it is a few centimetres down, and water only when it needs it. Wet down there while the plant is wilting is the most useful single fact you can get.
- Lift the pot. Weight is the most honest measurement in plant care and it costs nothing. A dry root ball is dramatically lighter than a wet one. If you have no reference for that pot yet, weigh it in your hand right after the next thorough water and remember the feeling.
- Feel a leaf. Overwatered leaves go soft, limp and slightly translucent. Underwatered leaves go dry, papery and crisp, and crumble at the edge. This one is quick and surprisingly decisive.
- Ask which leaves. The RHS notes that a dry plant tends to yellow and drop its oldest leaves at the base first, while overwatering tends to yellow old and new leaves at the same time, with browning appearing in the middle of leaves rather than only at the edges. Same principle as the yellow-leaves diagnostic: which leaves went first is most of the answer.
- Smell the compost. Healthy compost smells like soil. Sour, stagnant or faintly sulphurous means anaerobic conditions and, very likely, rot.
- Press the stem where it meets the compost. Firm is fine. Soft, dark or mushy at the base is the serious one, and it means acting today rather than at the weekend.
- If it is still ambiguous, tip the plant out and look at the roots. This feels drastic and is not. Healthy roots are white to pale tan, firm, and often fuzzy with root hairs. Rotting roots are brown to black, soft, and pull away when you touch them. Two minutes of looking beats a fortnight of guessing.

Overwatering is not about how often you water
This is the most useful reframe in the subject, and it is why so many careful people overwater. Overwatering is not a frequency. It is a duration: how long the compost stays saturated. You can water once a fortnight and still waterlog a plant if the water has nowhere to go.
So the real causes are usually structural rather than behavioural:
- No drainage hole. A beautiful pot with a solid base is a bucket. Excess water sits at the bottom with nowhere to leave.
- A decorative outer pot holding a puddle. The nursery pot drains perfectly and then stands in what it drained. Tip the outer pot out about twenty minutes after watering.
- A saucer left full. Same problem, more visible, still very easy to miss.
- Too big a pot. A small root system in a large volume of compost cannot use the water fast enough, so the excess stays wet for days.
- Dense or unsuitable compost. Cacti, succulents and most epiphytes want a much more open mix than standard multipurpose. Drainage is compost, not just a hole.
- The wrong season. The same weekly water that suits a plant in July can be far too much in November, when light is low, growth has slowed and evaporation has dropped. Winter is where most houseplant overwatering actually happens.
Fix the structure and the frequency mostly looks after itself.
The underwatering trap almost nobody expects
You water thoroughly, water runs straight out of the bottom within seconds, and you conclude the plant has had plenty. It has not. It is very likely you watered the gap.
When compost dries out completely — and peat-free mixes are particularly prone to this — it becomes water-repellent. The root ball also shrinks slightly and pulls away from the sides of the pot. Water then takes the path of least resistance, runs down that gap between compost and pot wall, and straight out of the drainage holes without wetting the root zone at all. Fast drainage feels like proof it is watered. It is often proof of the opposite.
The fix is bottom watering. Stand the pot in a bowl or sink of water for 10 to 15 minutes and let the compost draw water up until the surface darkens, then let it drain properly. Two signs: the compost has visibly shrunk from the edge of the pot, and water vanishes through it far faster than seems reasonable.
What to do: overwatered
- Stop watering. Obvious, and worth stating, because the instinct when a plant wilts is to water it.
- Empty every reservoir. Saucer, outer pot, anything the pot is standing in. Lift the plant out of its decorative pot and tip away what has collected.
- Get air to it. Somewhere brighter with some airflow, and not cold. Do not move it into harsh full sun while it is stressed.
- Check the roots if it is not clearly recovering. Tip it out. If most roots are firm and pale, you have caught it and it should come back on its own once the compost dries.
- If roots are brown and mushy, repot. Trim the dead roots off with clean scissors, repot into fresh compost with real drainage, and go down a pot size if you have lost a lot of root, so that the remaining roots are not sitting in more compost than they can use.
- Do not feed it. A plant with damaged roots cannot use fertiliser, and feeding a stressed plant adds salts to compost that is already causing trouble. Wait for new growth.
- Change one thing at a time. Repotting, feeding, moving and pruning all at once gives a stressed plant four more shocks and tells you nothing about which change helped.
What to do: underwatered
- Water thoroughly, not lightly. Until it runs freely from the bottom. Little and often keeps the top wet and the root ball dry, which is the worst of both.
- If the compost is water-repellent, bottom-water it. 10 to 15 minutes standing in water, then drain. Do not leave it in there for hours.
- Drain it properly afterwards. Never leave the pot standing in the leftover water — that is how a rescue turns into the other problem.
- Wait a day before judging it. Caught early, a thirsty plant usually looks a lot better within 24 to 48 hours. If nothing has improved after a good soak, you are probably not dealing with thirst.
- Then work out why it dried out. Root-bound in too small a pot, a hot windowsill, a radiator underneath, or a plant that has simply grown and now drinks more than it did in spring.
When it is neither
Plenty of things look like a watering problem and are not. Low light produces stretched growth and pale, dropping leaves. A sudden move causes leaf drop for a fortnight regardless of watering. Nutrient shortages have their own patterns, and the order the leaves change colour in separates those from water problems. Pests can wilt a plant that is watered perfectly.
If the soil test and the pot weight both come back normal, water is not your answer and you should stop adjusting it.
A note on moisture meters
Cheap two-prong moisture meters are better than nothing, but be aware of what they measure. Most inexpensive ones read electrical conductivity between two metal probes, and conductivity is affected by more than water: mineral salts from tap water and fertiliser can produce a wet reading in dry compost, different composts read differently at the same moisture level, and the probes corrode over time. They also only sample the small area between the prongs.
Use one as a second opinion if you like it. Do not let it overrule a finger and the weight of the pot.

The part that actually prevents it
None of the above is difficult. The difficulty is that both problems are well underway before they are visible, which is the general shape of nearly every plant problem and the reason it is so easy to be a step behind. Root rot in particular does its damage entirely out of sight and only surfaces once water uptake has already failed.
So the prevention is not a better schedule. It is checking the condition instead of the calendar — finger in the compost, pot in the hand — and adjusting across the year rather than watering in November the way you watered in July. That, or having something track the plant, the pot, the season and the weather for you, which is the specific thing I got tired of doing badly by hand.
FAQ
How do I tell if my plant is overwatered or underwatered when both cause wilting?
Feel the compost a few centimetres down and lift the pot. Wet compost and a heavy pot with a wilting plant means overwatering and probably root damage. Dry compost and a light pot means thirst. If you water a wilting plant and it has not improved at all within a day or two, treat it as a root problem rather than a watering problem.
Can a plant recover from overwatering?
Often yes, if enough of the root system is still firm and pale. Let the compost dry out, stop watering, and check the roots if it is not improving. Recovery from actual root rot needs the dead roots trimmed away and fresh, well-drained compost, and it takes weeks rather than days. The leaves already damaged will not turn back, so judge progress by new growth.
How long does it take for an overwatered plant to recover?
Longer than people expect. Mild overwatering with healthy roots can look better within a week or two once the compost dries. Where roots have rotted and been trimmed, you are waiting for the plant to grow new ones, which usually means several weeks before new top growth appears, and slower still in autumn and winter.
Why does water run straight through my pot but the plant is still dry?
The compost has dried out enough to become water-repellent and has shrunk away from the pot wall, so the water runs down the gap and out of the bottom without wetting the roots. Stand the pot in water for 10 to 15 minutes so it soaks up from below, then let it drain. This is very common with peat-free compost that has been allowed to dry out completely.
Is it better to underwater or overwater?
For most houseplants, err dry. Underwatering is a shortage the roots survive and usually recover from quickly; overwatering suffocates roots and invites rot, and that damage is structural. Ferns, carnivorous plants and a few moisture-lovers are the exceptions and genuinely do not want to dry out.
How often should I water my houseplants?
There is no correct number of days, and that is the real answer rather than a dodge. It depends on the plant, the pot, the compost, the light, the temperature and the season, and it shifts across the year — which is why a fixed weekly reminder is wrong most of the time. Check the compost and the weight of the pot, and water when the plant needs it.
